What is the Significance of Holi and Holika Dahan?
Holi represents one of the most profound intersections of astronomical cycles and Vedic mythology. Although widely recognized as a vibrant celebration of color and the arrival of spring, Holi is rooted in the ancient narrative of Holika Dahan; the ritualistic bonfire that symbolizes the victory of Dharma (righteousness) over Adharma (ego and malevolence).
By observing Holika Dahan, practitioners participate in a cosmic cleansing, preparing the spirit for the transformative growth promised by the new lunar cycle.
Holika Mangal/Dahan
Falgun month Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi ends on Monday 2nd March 2026 in the evening 05.58 (IST), thereafter Poornima Tithi will begin during Pradoshkaal. Dictum for Holika Dahan is given during Bhadra punch or Pradosh Kaal. As such between 06:39 and 09:00 Holika Dahan or Mangal is possible during Pradosh kaal on 2nd March itself. This is as per dictum of ‘Dharma Sindhu’ the Holy Book of the Hindus.
Bhadra Parihar Stotra must be recited to get rid of or minimize ill effects of Bhadra.
Bhadra Kaal on 2nd March 2026
Bhadra Kaal will begin on 2nd March 17:56 hours and will remain till 3rd March till small hours of morning 29:28 hours. This Bhadra will occur in Mritulok as this is dangerous for human being.
As an alternate to this, Holika Dahan or Mangal may be done on 3rd March during evening hours 18:22 minutes in the evening till 20:50 hours
Holi Celebration
National festival of Holi should be celebrated as per individuals ‘Social Tradition’. This may be celebrated on Poornima Tithi or on Prati Pada Tithi. Better this should be celebrated socially on 4th March 2026 all over India irrespective of day of Holika Dahan either on 2nd or 3rd March 2026.
My personal expert religious opinion of Holi among family member and friend on 4th March 2026 after the Sunrise. Remember Holi is a Festival of love, friendship and togetherness.
